What is how to write on an envelope?
Here's how to properly address an envelope:
Recipient's Address (Center of Envelope):
- Full Name: Write the recipient's full first name and last name. Include any titles (Mr., Ms., Dr., etc.) if known and appropriate.
- Street Address or PO Box: Use the complete and correct street address, including apartment, unit, or suite number if applicable. If they have a PO Box use that instead.
- City, State, and Zip Code: Write the city, state (using the official two-letter abbreviation), and the complete zip code on the same line. Use all caps for the state abbreviation.
Sender's Address (Upper Left Corner):
- Full Name: Your full name.
- Street Address or PO Box: Your complete address.
- City, State, and Zip Code: Your city, state, and zip code. Follow the same formatting as the recipient's address.
Other Tips:
- Use a Pen: Use a dark ink (black or blue) pen or permanent marker for readability.
- Print Clearly: Write neatly and legibly. If your handwriting is poor, consider printing the addresses.
- Avoid Abbreviations (where possible): While USPS has standards for abbreviations, writing out words ensures greater clarity.
- Placement: Keep the addresses aligned and avoid writing over or too close to the edges of the envelope.
- Return Address: Always include a return address so the mail can be returned if it's undeliverable.
- Stamps: Affix postage stamps in the upper right corner of the envelope.
